Whether you’re fully remote or working in a hybrid setting, you need to be as efficient as you would be in the office. If your home office isn’t set up properly, your performance may start to suffer. Being uncomfortable or not being able to focus for long periods of time makes for a difficult workday. Here are just a few essential items for an efficient home office:

Ergonomic chair

If you don’t have an ergonomic desk chair, it’s time to get one. Relying on a chair from the kitchen table doesn’t cut it—sitting for hours every day in an uncomfortable chair can leave you with back and neck pain. Your chair should have good lumbar support, arm rests, adjustable height, and a comfortable back.

Standing desk

Sitting for long periods of time can be hard on your hips and lower back, so standing will stretch those joints out and bring some relief. If the desk itself can’t adjust in height, you can get a platform to put under your monitor that can raise. A cushioned floor mat to stand on is a good idea if you prefer to be on your feet most of the day.

Storage

While your office may have large file cabinets and cubbies to stay organized, you may not have the space for that luxury at home. Small file cabinets, shelves, and desk organizers are going to be key. A cluttered desk isn’t ideal for working, so any loose papers should be put into a desk-top file organizer.

Organization tools

Not only is it important to have an organized desk, but there are also several items that can help you stay mentally organized. White boards, notebooks, day planners, and sticky notes are just a few ways that you can keep tabs on what you need to accomplish. Remember that if you’re in a hybrid setting, you’ll likely need to bring your notebook or planner back and forth, so you always have what you need.

Good lighting

A well-lit room keeps you more alert and awake, but if your overhead lighting is harsh and irritating, it can be difficult to focus. However, sitting in a dark room with a bright screen isn’t ideal for your eyes, so natural lighting and lamps are a good choice. If your home office doesn’t have windows, you may want a floor lamp along with a desk lamp.
